How does this random food generator work?

Tap Generate and it picks one dish at random from about 70 everyday favorites, from beef noodle soup to tacos to tiramisu. Use the filters to keep it to Asian, Western, breakfast or dessert. It never shows the same dish twice in a row.

The list is the same set of dishes we draw for the Today's Mealow app, so every pick comes with a picture of the actual food, not a stock photo of a plate. The last few picks stay listed under the result, in case you want to go back to one you passed on.

Use your first reaction

The useful part of a random pick is how you feel about it in the first second. Relief means go. A small "ugh" means that's not it, so tap again.

Filter before you tap

Already know it's a dessert night? Pick the filter first so every tap is a real option.

Stop at three

If three taps haven't landed, the problem is the category, not the dish. Switch filters.

Why use a random food picker at all?

Because most of the time you aren't short of ideas, you have too many that are all fine. A random pick breaks the tie. It gives you one concrete dish to react to, which is much easier than choosing from a blank page.

It also takes the negotiation out of it when you're eating with someone else. Nobody has to be the one who picked the place. The generator picked, and you both get a veto.

What if I want a dish from somewhere near me?

That's what the full app does. Today's Mealow asks what meal it is, how you're feeling, what flavor you want, who you're with and what you skip, then picks three dishes from real restaurants around you, each with a one-line reason.

Random is great for breaking a tie. When you want a pick that fits your mood and is actually nearby, answer the six questions instead. It's free and runs in your browser.
